What is Swimmer’s Ear?
Inflammation of the ear canal (External Otitis, Otitis Externa) is sometimes called Swimmer’s Ear.
This is an inflammation or infection of the ear canal, often caused by exposure to water, swimming, diving or humid and hot conditions.
Symptoms may include:
- Itching
- Secretions
- Tenderness and/or pain
- Swelling of the ear canal with possible hearing loss
Ear canal inflammation (Otitis Externa) can be very common when on holiday or during the summer months
Water in the ear canal reduces the protection provided by ear wax. The skin then becomes more easily irritated or swollen and is prone to be infected by bacteria or fungus.
Problems with inflammation of the ear canal also occur due to other causes such as prolonged use of headphones, earphones, hearing aids, earplugs, cotton swabs, skin disease, etc.
